KKR vs MI IPL 2026 Match Report: Kolkata Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

The playoff race in IPL 2026 is getting tighter, and the Kolkata Knight Riders kept themselves alive with a crucial four-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians at the iconic Eden Gardens.

On a slow and challenging surface, KKR’s bowlers dominated the contest before Manish Pandey delivered a composed knock in the chase to help his side secure an important win. The result lifted Kolkata to sixth place on the points table and extended their remarkable turnaround in the second half of the season.

KKR bowlers crush Mumbai’s batting lineup

After opting to field first, Kolkata made the perfect start with the ball. The pace duo of Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey rattled Mumbai Indians early during the Powerplay.

Cameron Green removed Ryan Rickelton with a sharp delivery before dismissing Naman Dhir after a successful DRS review. Saurabh Dubey then got rid of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav to leave MI struggling at 46/4 after six overs.

Mumbai’s innings never truly recovered from that collapse.

Sunil Narine spins a web in middle overs

Once the Powerplay ended, veteran spinner Sunil Narine took complete control of the game.

The mystery spinner bowled with incredible accuracy on a pitch assisting turn and bounce. Tilak Varma found it extremely difficult to score freely, managing only 20 runs off 32 deliveries before Kartik Tyagi finally dismissed him.

Narine’s spell of 4-0-13-1 completely choked the scoring rate, while Varun Chakaravarthy also kept the pressure intact from the opposite end.

Despite a late cameo from Corbin Bosch, who smashed an unbeaten 32 off 18 balls, Mumbai Indians could only post 147/8 in their 20 overs.

Manish Pandey steps up for KKR

The chase was not entirely straightforward for Kolkata. Deepak Chahar generated movement early and dismissed Finn Allen cheaply. Ajinkya Rahane also struggled before falling in the Powerplay.

With Angkrish Raghuvanshi leaving the field due to a concussion after colliding with Varun Chakaravarthy earlier in the match, veteran batter Manish Pandey was promoted to No.3.

Pandey grabbed the opportunity brilliantly.

Playing his first innings of the season, he anchored the chase with a calm and valuable 45 off 33 deliveries. He stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership with Rovman Powell, who contributed a fighting 40 from 30 balls.

Their stand ensured Kolkata stayed ahead of the required rate despite the tricky conditions.

Kartik Tyagi’s revival becomes key for KKR

One of the biggest positives for Kolkata this season has been the resurgence of Kartik Tyagi.

After struggling with injuries and inconsistent opportunities in previous IPL seasons, Tyagi has emerged as KKR’s leading pacer in IPL 2026. The right-arm quick now has 18 wickets this season and has played a major role in Kolkata’s strong middle and death-over bowling performances.

Tyagi’s improved variations, especially his slower balls and hard-length deliveries, have made him a dangerous option in pressure situations. Against Mumbai, he removed Tilak Varma at a critical moment and once again showed why he has become such an important figure in KKR’s bowling attack.

KKR’s playoff hopes still alive

A month ago, Kolkata Knight Riders looked completely out of contention after losing six consecutive matches. However, six wins in their last seven games have reignited their campaign dramatically.

The victory over Mumbai Indians keeps their playoff hopes alive heading into their final league match against Delhi Capitals. KKR will also closely watch Mumbai’s upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals, as several results still need to go in their favour.

For Mumbai Indians, the disappointing season continues despite flashes of brilliance from players like Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma. Their bowling inconsistencies and inability to build partnerships throughout the tournament ultimately cost them a playoff spot.
