Punjab Kings are facing a significant reshuffle of their coaching staff ahead of the IPL 2027 season, with Australian coaches James Hopes and Brad Haddin leaving their respective positions within Ricky Ponting's support team.
Hopes, who served as Punjab Kings' fast-bowling coach, and Haddin, the franchise's fielding coach, have both moved on to senior coaching roles in Australian domestic cricket. Their departures leave Ponting with several important positions to fill before the IPL 2027 auction.
The changes come after spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule also left the franchise following the 2026 season to join the Indian men's national team in the same role under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
With three members of the support staff now departing, Ponting and the Punjab Kings management will need to rebuild an important part of the coaching structure before the new IPL campaign begins.
James Hopes Takes Charge of Queensland and Brisbane Heat
Hopes' departure from Punjab Kings was largely expected after he was appointed head coach of Queensland and Brisbane Heat.
The former Australia all-rounder had spent two seasons working under Ponting at Punjab Kings. The pair had previously worked together at Delhi Capitals, making Hopes one of the more familiar members of Ponting's coaching setup.
His move back into Australian domestic cricket gives him a major new responsibility, overseeing both Queensland and Brisbane Heat.
Hopes is already involved in Sheffield Shield cricket, with Queensland facing Western Australia in Perth.
Brad Haddin Returns to New South Wales
Haddin has also taken on a major domestic coaching position after being appointed head coach of New South Wales.
The former Australia wicketkeeper had been part of the Punjab Kings backroom setup since 2022, initially working under former head coach Trevor Bayliss before continuing into Ponting's tenure.
His move to New South Wales represents another significant opportunity for the former international cricketer, who has gradually built his coaching career since retiring from playing.
Haddin is currently involved with New South Wales during the Sheffield Shield season, with the side facing Tasmania in Sydney.
Ponting Faces Three Key Coaching Vacancies
The departure of Hopes and Haddin comes at a difficult time for Punjab Kings because the franchise is already looking for a replacement for Bahutule.
Bahutule joined Punjab Kings ahead of the 2026 IPL season after previously working with Rajasthan Royals. He replaced Sunil Joshi as the franchise's spin-bowling coach.
Following the conclusion of IPL 2026, Bahutule left Punjab Kings to take up the spin-bowling coach position with India's men's national team.
As a result, Ponting now has to identify replacements for the fast-bowling, fielding and spin-bowling roles.
The Punjab Kings management is expected to discuss potential candidates with Ponting, but the head coach is likely to have significant influence over the final appointments.
Sources indicate that interviews and decisions regarding new coaches could take place before the IPL 2027 auction, which is expected to be held in December.
Hopes Had a Long Association With Ponting
Hopes' departure is particularly notable because of his close professional relationship with Ponting.
The pair previously worked together at Delhi Capitals before moving to Punjab Kings, where Hopes became an important part of Ponting's coaching structure.
His experience as a former Australia cricketer and specialist bowling coach made him an important figure in the development of Punjab's pace attack.
With Hopes now moving into a head coaching role, Ponting will need to find someone capable of taking over those responsibilities while maintaining continuity within the team's bowling plans.
Haddin Leaves After Four Years With Punjab Kings
Haddin's exit ends a considerably longer association with Punjab Kings.
He joined the franchise's coaching setup in 2022 during Bayliss' tenure and remained involved through the transition to Ponting.
His experience as an international wicketkeeper and fielding specialist provided Punjab with a senior voice within the support staff.
Finding his replacement will therefore be another important task for Ponting as the franchise prepares for the next IPL cycle.
Punjab Kings Enter IPL 2027 With Plenty to Prove
The coaching changes come after a mixed period for Punjab Kings.
The franchise has never won the IPL title, although it came close on two occasions. Punjab reached the final in 2014, when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders, before returning to the final in 2025, where they were beaten by Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Ponting took over as head coach ahead of the 2025 season and immediately helped Punjab enjoy a strong campaign, eventually reaching the final.
The team also made an impressive start to IPL 2026.
Punjab Kings won their first six matches of the season, with one additional game ending in a washout, giving them early momentum and placing them among the leading teams.
However, their campaign deteriorated after that strong opening.
Punjab won only one more match while suffering six defeats, ultimately missing out on the playoffs.
That late-season collapse will be something Ponting and his staff will want to address before IPL 2027.
A Crucial Period Before the IPL 2027 Auction
The timing of the coaching departures means Punjab Kings have an important period ahead of them.
The franchise must not only prepare for the auction but also rebuild a support structure that has undergone considerable change.
Ponting will now be central to the process of identifying replacements, with the franchise expected to work closely with him before final decisions are made.
The new coaching appointments could have an important role in shaping Punjab's bowling strategy, fielding standards and player development ahead of the next season.
With Hopes and Haddin moving into senior domestic coaching positions in Australia and Bahutule joining India, Punjab Kings will enter IPL 2027 with a noticeably different support team.
Punjab Kings' Next Challenge
Punjab Kings have shown that they can compete with the strongest teams in the IPL, but consistency has remained a major challenge.
Their run to the 2025 final demonstrated the potential of Ponting's project, while the six-match winning streak at the beginning of IPL 2026 showed that the squad could again challenge at the top.
The failure to maintain that momentum, however, highlighted the need for greater stability.
As Ponting searches for three new members of his coaching staff, the decisions made over the coming months could become an important part of Punjab Kings' preparation for another title challenge.
For a franchise still searching for its first IPL championship, rebuilding the coaching team may be the first major step toward making that ambition a reality.
